The reality of it is that the more I kept thinking about this blog and how I haven't put anything in it for a long time and therefore how it was probably going to remain untouched for a very long time, the more I realised that I was actually still thinking about it and therefore had no choice but to conclude that I do actually care that it carries on.
For now.
Soooo yeah. Here I am.
Updates:
- The nursery is finished! ...almost. Fully painted, new curtain rail and curtains, wardrobe, chest of drawers, toy box, nursery rocking/feeding chair, footstool all built. Wallpaper border up and actually not too wonky - although whoever invented the stuff needs to die a thousand deaths in as many different and painful ways as possible... "paste it then submerge the whole thing in water then try and get it level on your wall without it (a) looking like it was put up by a drunk blind person and (b) smearing pasty-water all over newly painted wall and newly-laid carpeting". Luckily, I had the presence of mind to actually think ahead on a DIY job (we're in uncharted territory here, for me) and get some plastic sheeting type stuff, so the carpet was saved. The walls just about escaped damage. But only just.
Only thing left now is the cot. Minor thing, but hey, not needed immediately - and to be fair the only thing that has stopped this being constructed is the fact that the courier company haven't smegging delivered it yet.
Wife has started filling up new furniture with new little person clothing... she's not even born yet and still already has more clothing than my wife and I combined!
Accessories in place including themed lamp, stuffed toys, lampshade, rug and nappy stacker.
It looks good :) Just a pity the rest of the house doesn't quite live up to the nice standard! But hey, at least the best room is for the littl'un, even if she won't be using the vast majority of it for a couple of months.
- Wife = heavily pregnant, now at 32 weeks and counting, and looking beautiful. Both parents-to-be still of the dangerous belief that there is no possible way the child will arrive before full term, although father getting increasingly worried and paranoid that the night/hospital bag is not quite ready yet. Yes, we have the kid's room ready that won't be used straight away, but no we don't have the stuff necessary to bring with us into hospital to bring her into this world.
Priorities. We has them.
- Work = um... intriguing. Still the same to be honest. I have a new boss, which happens to be someone I've been working with for a while now so that's OK. If I wasn't about to become a Dad then I'd probably be more annoyed than I am now about some of the stuff going on - but the reality is that nothing huge is changing from my point of view so I reckon all of this work stuff will simply pale into insignificance once my daughter is born and my day job will simply turn from a stalled career into "the thing that pays for food, bills, the mortgage and any possible extra thing that my kid needs". I'm told kids are a sliiiight drain on ye ol' finances. No more gadget-buying for a while :(
...unless I can convince my wife that it benefits the child, somehow :) then again, she's into gadgety/cool things anyway so she'll probably take that as easily a good enough excuse to have it. Whatever it is.
I want to buy something now :/
- NCT meetings. Last one tomorrow! The transition of how I felt when these first started and how I feel now is - quite simply - astonishing. The very first time I walked into the NCT meeting and was asked to put a name badge on, I thought we were in trouble (name-badges being the universal indicator of "a crap/embarrassing/boring/uncomfortable time is coming soon"). Now, however, I can genuinely say that I am going to miss them - there are some great people in our little group and I'm pleased to say we have plans to continue to meet up with some of them.
One of the sessions was a breast-feeding session held at some woman's house. As far as I can tell, all she does is talk about breasts for a living. You could do worse, couldn't you. Especially since our group of 14 people (4 couldn't make it) easily fit into the annex just off her kitchen, which was itself about the size of the entire bottom floor of our house. Very impressive building - looked stunning. I was, however, disappointed on this occasion as I had been promised that what can only be described as a 'woolly boob' would be making an appearance in the session - and it didn't. You may think that it's a bit weird to be disappointed by this, however after weeks and weeks of being told it would be there, I had developed what I can only describe as a disturbing fascination with this mythical object, so the sadness that brewed in me when it didn't show was unavoidable as far as I'm concerned. No woolly boobage.
- Parents/Parents-In-Law. Both sides looking forward to the impending grandchild. One side in particular worrying the hell out of us; "you don't need a car seat to take the baby home in - just carry her on your lap in the car like everyone else does" is one particular moment I won't forget soon, and doesn't help with thoughts of leaving our long-sought-after and fought-for child alone with them if a car journey is involved! Wife's parents, lovely as they are, also have an amazing ability to anger, sadden and genuinely upset my wife at the drop of a hat sometimes - not helpful near the end of an emotional rollercoaster of a pregnancy.
Both sets of grandparents-to-be generally very supportive though, apart from the odd incident such as the ones above, so for that I'm of course very thankful.
- Sky+ Box. Had an emergency there not long ago in that it only had about 3% of its capacity left to record something. PANIC! Cue several days in a row catching up on favourites such as Lost, 24, FlashForward, Scrubs, Bones, Fringe, Lie To Me, Heroes, CSI: Las Vegas, some decent movies and of course the epic new The Pacific from the team behind Band of Brothers.
Sudden realisation that most of these will not finish their current series before child is born. Eek. Eeeeeeeeeek.
Sky+ Box back to 50% capacity :)
- Started re-reading favourite books of all time - The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy: A trilogy in five parts. I will never, ever, get bored of these books. Awesome.
- Still lots of things to do round the house - i.e. grow up and start living in a place that resembles adult accommodation and not teenager's houseshare. Rubbish.
Plenty to do then - but we have friends from Holland coming over on Thursday and staying till Friday. This of course means going out, possible cinema trip, baby-shopping (for the girlies) hoping there's a pub nearby (for the men - grrr) and meals out.
Looking forward to it :)
Looking forward to it :)
Anyway, back to work. S'pose I'd better start on any of the things I haven't yet started on.
Blog - resurrected.
Work - has always been there, and continues. There's no pleasing some people.
"That's what Jesus said." - Monty Python's Life of Brian (love it)
TTFN (I suppose I'd better credit Tigger with that one 'n all)
